Cindy was a thirty-seven-year-old loan officer who knew that she had a drinking problem. For instance, within the past month she has experienced the need to have more than a few drinks before going to work, three weeks ago she failed a random hair alcohol test where she works, two weeks ago she got arrested for "driving under the influence", and lastly, for almost five months she has started to forget what she says and does when she drinks with her buddies.
Not unlike other drinkers, Cindy's alcohol involvement began gradually and continued at this level for quite a long time because from time to time she engaged in casual social drinking. In actual fact, for around six months, every time she went out with her pals to drink, she made sure to drink in moderation. Something about her drinking activities, nevertheless, seemed to completely change when she divorced her husband.
Cindy got extremely dejected about the breakup with her husband, and as a way to abstain from fixating on her depressing feelings she made up her mind that she would begin palling around more frequently with some of her buddies who love to party. It didn't take very long, nevertheless, before her drinking increased substantially the more frequently she went to and drank at family get-togethers, sporting events, happy hours, dinner dates, and private parties with her pals.
In short, she was having fun drinking just like everyone else in her group of pals without too much deliberation regarding the alcohol short term effects and especially about the alcohol long term effects she has been going though. Yet somewhere in her mind she realized the facts about the negative alcohol effects on the body and on the brain and that she probably needed alcohol rehabilitation but stayed away from the thought as much as possible.
One morning during her yearly physical exam, her physician asked her if she drank alcohol. Not wanting to lie to her physician, Cindy admitted that she commonly drinks more than she should. As a matter of fact, she stated that she regularly drinks in an excessive and irresponsible manner. Then Cindy informed her physician about her depression. More precisely, she mentioned that ruined relationships often set off a depressing sequence of events characterized by increased drinking which further resulted in more disheartening feelings that, in turn, led to more drinking. And this is exactly what took place when her husband and she got divorced four years ago.
Cindy's physician then stated the following: "I am not trying to make an impulsive diagnosis, but with your medical situation we may be facing two separate issues. Consequently, I think we probably need to make an appointment for you to get an alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction assessment from my partner, Dr. Brill, who is a drug and alcohol addiction specialist."
"Whether your drinking circumstance is more associated with alcohol abuse or alcoholism is unclear at this time, but I believe that further exploration is justifiable. Then I believe we should make an appointment for you to get a psychological exam from another one of my partners, Dr. Cohen, who is a psychologist."
"I need to get some more information about your sadness and see how much your drinking and depression are related." Cindy showed her approval of her doctor's strategy and thanked him for his help.
