Emily was a forty-four-year-old accounts payable manager who was fed up with feeling depressed everyday and tired of her careless and abusive drinking behavior. Stated briefly, she was sick of feeling tired every morning, she was angry with herself for spending her hard-earned money on a valueless habit, she was tired of going through failed relationship after failed relationship because of her irresponsible drinking, she missed her old drive for doing various things she enjoyed, and she hated the hangovers she went through on a regular basis.

As well as the perceptible alcohol-related health problems she was going through, possibly the most regretful part of her drinking regimen was the undependable and scheming person she had turned into. In her heart she knew that she had been untruthful about her drinking behavior to her relatives, family, and friends and she also knew she had been less than honest with herself about the "healthy" outcomes of drinking. Not only this but she rationalized wolfing down two or three alcoholic beverages before going to social activities and she also rationalized needing one or two drinks as soon as she got up so that she could manage the "anxiety" at her job. Simply put, Emily got to a pivotal time in her life when she finally realized that she hit the bottom of the barrel in her life and was now ready to begin the gradual and slow path that leads to recovery.

One of the primary ways that Emily put her "plan" into action was by requesting a transfer at her workplace. When her request was granted, she moved 800 miles away to a new location. If nothing else, this positively made making new friends and buddies and separating herself from her old friends and pals easier. Then she went to see a healthcare practitioner in her new town and scheduled an appointment for a complete physical exam.

After meeting with the healthcare practitioner and taking numerous laboratory tests, it was determined that Emily had made the unfortunate change from alcohol abuse to alcoholism and consequently, needed alcohol detox and alcohol therapy. At this difficult time, her healthcare practitioner made it a point to highlight the various alcoholic symptoms and the usual symptoms of alcoholism. In addition to taking a lot of time focusing on Emily's alcoholism symptoms, the doctor also told Emily that it was decided that she was clinically depressed and in need of treatment for her medical issue.

Due to her eagerness to follow through with the treatment protocol, after ten weeks of inpatient treatment, Emily was ready to start rehab on an outpatient basis. At this time in her life, she began working at her new job and over a period of several weeks began fortifying her body by drinking distilled water, eating nutritious foods, taking vitamins and minerals, working out, and living an alcohol-free lifestyle.

After nearly ten weeks of outpatient therapy during which time she never experienced a relapse, Emily quit going to alcohol rehabilitation and instead began going three times every week to local AA meetings. Going to these meetings helped Emily continue her alcohol-free style of life, they gave her the support she sought after, and they served as a faithful reminder of the damaging consequences that are related to abusive and careless drinking. Compared with her life just a few short months ago, life was now meaningful and loaded with potential that she could have never yearned for or brought to fruition while while she was troubled with abusive drinking behavior.
