Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics show that alcohol abuse among adolescents is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Numerous alcohol dependency specialists assert that alcohol advertisements brought into being by the media are a primary reason for the rise in teen alcohol abuse.

Other chemical dependency authorities affirm that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and accessibility of wine, beer, and liquor in our society. Still other alcohol addiction professionals claim that quite a few of our adolescents get involved in risky drinking because of the increased stress that they go through.

From a slightly different perspective, due to the fact that both parents in more than a few families work full or part-time, the lack of parental guidance unquestionably has to play a significant part in the rise in adolescent alcohol abuse. And finally, different chemical dependency specialists affirm that the proliferation of teen alcohol abuse is due, in part, to our lenient society.

One feature of teen alcohol abuse that seems to be somewhat missing in the alcohol dependency research results, in spite of this, is the lack of educational programs that teach teenagers how to augment their coping skills so that their abusive drinking behavior is substantially diminished or exterminated. More explicitly, scientific research has demonstrated that there is an indirect relationship between poor coping skills and abusive and excessive drinking.

In effect, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the higher the prevalence of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a truthful contention, why isn't coping skills training a primary part of the academic prospectus in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?

Let us create a scenario for for the purpose of elucidation. Let us imagine a society in which all individuals are taught how to achieve solid coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including the twelfth grade. In such a society, when life gets demanding, people who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a healthier and more rewarding way, contrary to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to put their coping skills into operation.

Stated differently, students who exhibit excellent coping skills will be more able to think clearly and engage in first-class decision making as opposed to adolescents who, because they were unsuccessful in their attempts to learn top quality coping skills, are attracted to the "quick fix" of hazardous drinking.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, furthermore, if teens not only got first-rate coping skills training but also obtained an exceptional education that underscored the long term and short term negative consequences associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these types of teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills training, it is pronounced, would help adolescents keep away from the obvious charm associated with underage drinking and, as a consequence, would notably reduce the abusive drinking behavior undertaken by the youth in our country.

There are indubitably several valid reasons why so many of our teenagers drink in an excessive manner. Such a knotty issue demands a thorough and more meaningful response by our politicians, educators, students, and parents so that our youth can learn how to cope with life's difficulties in a more productive and responsible way instead of resorting to unhealthy drinking to solve their difficulties.
